International activities

The civil security challenges of the future are not tied to national borders. In fact, they are often global in scale. To provide long-term protection for the public, the key goals of the “Research for civil security” framework programme include expansion of international research cooperation, involvement in the development of Europe’s security architecture and initiation and continuation of international research alliances.

Security research within Horizon Europe: Funding for innovation in the field of civil security

From 2021 to 2027, Horizon Europe provides crucial impetus for research and innovation in Europe. Researchers in the field of civil security are invited to contribute by building research consortia that span Europe and bring new approaches and solutions to the areas of fighting crime and terrorism, protection of critical infrastructures, border management and for strengthening disaster resilience of European societies.

Bilateral cooperation in civil security research

It is a well-known fact that natural disasters, terrorism, organised crime and major accidents are ignorant of national borders. So it is only logical that we should seek possibilities at the European and international level for sharing ideas about how public security can be guaranteed, rather than debating the subject in the national arena only. In this respect, Austria, France, India, Israel and the US are key partners. Germany’s cooperation with other countries is about harnessing the various potential synergies to shape research and innovation so as to improve security for the public and grasp the opportunities presented by international markets.
